The season of a champion

Alberto Di Folco, racing driver Lamborghini Geneva

Monza first raised a smile on her face d-Alberto Di Folco, At the beginning of the season, he was kidnapped on November 3. He almost became the Italian GT Endurance champion until just under half an hour from the end of the fourth and final round of the season. An extraordinary season for the Roman rider, who saw him win the Mugello with the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo of the Imperiale Racing team, shared with Andrea Amici and Stuart Middleton, taking the podium at the opening round of Pergusa last May and taking the pole on the Brianza circuit.

On the Lombard circuit, the weekend started with the best overall time achieved during the qualifying. The third and final qualifying round was decisive, because Alberto got into the car and made an incredible 1:46.657, achieving with extreme ease the feat that nobody else managed to accomplish: to close a lap in less than a minute and 47 seconds.

He was followed by a 3 hour race dominated almost from end to end, with Amici taking an excellent start and confirming leadership from pole. The Roman rider has consistently maintained an advantage of about a second over Daniel Zampieri's Ferrari, followed in turn by Riccardo Agostini's Audi. The situation remained unchanged until the change of pilot, when Amici entered the stands before the others. Middleton took the wheel, still in the lead with more than ten seconds ahead of the Ferrari, now driven by Stefano Gai. Another stop, but the leadership still belongs to the Lamborghini in which Alberto went, being the protagonist of the last relay. The Roman driver was initially able to manage an advance of more than 35 seconds over Zampieri. But about 20 minutes from the end, it started to rain heavily and Mattia Drudi's Audi passed Zampieri, taking second place. This meant only one thing: no title for the Lambo crew. At that time, the only possibility was that Drudi, on track with dry tires, would be betrayed by wet asphalt. Especially if it started raining harder. On the other hand, under such conditions, it would have been impossible to take any risk for Imperial Racing. Hence the decision to go back to the stands to slip the rain tires. Instead, the track remained stable and, in the end, Di Folco finished behind the Audi, which won the title and would have won even if she had finished second.

A total of 129 laps were made in the lead position out of the 397 laps in the four races. 80 out of 94 in the decisive round at Monza. Figures that tell a lot about the team's performance in this extraordinary year of 2021, where only the icing was missing on the cake.

« We are very disappointed to have lost a title that already seemed to be ours. But that's how the races take place, said Alberto Di Folco. We finished second in the championship. An important result. For this reason, I would like to thank again Lamborghini Geneva and Lamborghini Squadra Corsica for the support they have given me, but also all my sponsors, whose support has proved to be fundamental, and of course the guys of the Imperiale Racing team, with whom I had a great season, crowned by the victory at Monza in the extra commitment of the beginning of the year, in Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe ».

Lamborghini Geneva will again support Alberto Di Folco for the 2022 season. Viva Alberto!
